The Role of Education in Kosovo: The Contribution of the Gülen Movement

The biggest asset of Kosovo is its youth. With more than 70 per cent of its population being below 30, Kosovo has the youngest population in Europe. These young people need education, because an educated youth can guarantee a better future for the country. This paper will address the importance of having an educated youth and the danger of neglecting youth education.  On the role and significance of youth education, we will look at the interpretation of M. Fethullah Gülen, who has written extensively on this issue. M. Gülen’s words on education are very inspiring when he says ‘the solution of every problem in this life ultimately depends on human beings, education is the most effective vehicle, regardless of whether we have a paralyzed social and political system or we have one that operates like clockwork’.

The second part of my paper is about the contribution of Gülen Movement in Kosovo with regard to education. This movement began officially operating in Kosovo in 2004 through the Foundation for Education and Culture “Atmosfera”. Apart from giving a remarkable contribution in interfaith dialogue, this movement is also respected for working extensively on education. In the center of Gülen Movement is the development and education of men and women of this country.  Therefore, in this paper we will show the main educational activities of Gülen Movement in Kosovo; its contribution in translating and publishing books, organizing seminars, building schools and dormitories in a country where war and genocide had devastated almost everything except its spirit to recover and rebuild itself. Gülen Movement enjoys great support from local political and religious authorities and is respected for the role par excellence it is playing in the education field.
